We’ve all been there. A flight delay; a gate change; a scramble to find your booking confirmation number—or the right amount to tip. Having accurate information at your fingertips is key to navigating your trip with ease.
TripIt’s myriad features and tools can help you not only avoid travel-related hiccups, but also get your trip back on track.
Here’s a round-up of some common travel disruptions, plus the ways TripIt can help:
1. If you forgot to check your destination’s visa requirements…
TripIt Pro Travel Guidance has you covered. Once you book a trip, you’ll be able to easily see your destination’s current requirements for visas, as well as other documentation, health insurance, and vaccination, plus safety information and whether the country is open for travel.
Travel Guidance also factors in your nationality, passport information, origin, and travel dates. For instance, visa information could vary based on your passport and the duration of your visit. Visa information may also include details on different types of visas, such as a business or tourist visa, and links to applications or forms.
2. If you missed your flight…
You can consult TripIt Pro Alternate Flights. Alternate Flights instantly finds you different flight options, whether your current flight has been delayed, canceled, or you’d just like to leave on another flight. If you find a flight which works for you, contact the airline or your travel vendor directly to make the update.
3. If you got lost navigating the airport…
Use Interactive Airport Maps to search for anything you need while at the airport, such as your gate or a charging station, and get step-by-step walking instructions to your destination.
Interactive Airport Maps will also show you how long it should take to get to where you need to go, their hours of operation and other useful details.
4. If you felt the vibes were off in an unfamiliar neighborhood…
Everyone has a different comfort level when they travel. Neighborhood Safety Scores are hyperlocal safety scores for neighborhoods around the world. A composite score represents the overall risk for a location.
The scores are also broken down into categories, such as overall safety (an objective measure of the safety quality at a location), health and medical, physical harm, women’s safety, LGBTQ safety, and more. Separate scores are available for daytime and nighttime.
To help you make the best decisions for you as you travel, and to better understand the areas in which you’re traveling, you can now set a personal risk level within the Neighborhood Safety Scores feature from TripIt. Then, we’ll warn you if you’re planning on visiting an area that exceeds your threshold.
5. If you needed to locate a pharmacy ASAP…
Whether you’re looking for a place to eat, drink, pick up supplies, or seek medical care, TripIt’s Nearby Places feature makes it easy to find places close to where you’re staying. If you find a place you want to visit but can’t get there right away, you can save it in TripIt to visit later.
All you need to do is access Nearby Places in the lodging details screen of your TripIt app. To get there, tap on your trip, and then tap on where you’re staying. There you will find Nearby Places. Then, select the type of place you’re looking for, and TripIt will find what’s close by.
6. If you forgot to check in online for your flight…
TripIt Pro sends real-time flight alerts throughout a trip, including check-in reminders 24 hours prior to scheduled departure. You can also receive interactive push notifications to check in directly to your flight or view flight details.
7. If your terminal or gate changed—and you went to the wrong one…
Flight alerts can also help you in this situation. On the day of your flight, TripIt Pro sends notifications for:
- Arrival and connection summaries
- Departure summary and gate changes (beginning four hours before departure)
- Cancellations and delays (plus alternate flight options are available in the app)
- Weather
- Terminal and gate notifications when you're close to the airport (as push notifications)
8. If you couldn’t find your booking number or forgot to forward it to TripIt…
Inbox Sync automatically adds travel plans from your email inbox to your TripIt itinerary
Simply connect your Gmail, Google Workspace, Outlook, Microsoft 365, Hotmail, and Yahoo inboxes with your TripIt account. Once connected, your travel plans are automatically added to your TripIt account. You never have to remember to forward an email again. Inbox Sync can be activated in the TripIt app and TripIt website.
9. If you didn’t know the local tipping etiquette…
Even the most frequent flyer faces uncertainty when navigating international travel requirements, but TripIt Pro Travel Guidance keeps you in the know.
With International Travel Tools, you can easily access information about your destination’s tipping guidelines, as well as its official language, measurement system, time zone, currency, embassy location and contact details, outlets and plugs, and more.
10. If you underestimated—or overestimated—how long it would take to get to the airport…
TripIt Pro Go Now alerts you when you should leave for the airport based on your current location, flight status, and real-time traffic conditions. We’ll even send you a push notification 10 minutes before it’s time to go and estimate your arrival time once you’re on your way to the airport.
11. If your flight time changed and you showed up at the airport at the wrong time…
Once again, TripIt Pro saves you here, monitoring your flights and sending flight alerts if the departure time changes.
We also send departure summary and gate changes starting at four hours before departure, as well as terminal and gate notifications when you're close to the airport so you know exactly where to go.
12. If the cost of airfare dropped after you booked, but you didn’t know you could get a refund…
TripIt Pro Fare Tracker can put money back in your pocket. With Fare Tracker, TripIt Pro monitors your itinerary for ongoing changes in your flight price. If your airfare price drops after you book, we’ll send you an alert. You'll be notified if a potential airline credit or refund is available to get money back on your flight.
With Fare Tracker, your TripIt Pro membership might pay for itself!
13. If you meant to upgrade your seat, but forgot to check back after booking…
Don’t get stuck in the middle seat! With TripIt Pro, you can use Seat Maps and Seat Tracker to find a better seat on your next flight.
Seat Maps display the seat configuration for your flight, including where exit rows are located. You can filter by class (first/premium/economy), row location (window, middle, aisle, area of the plane (ahead of wing, over wing, etc.), and select to find seats together.
Seat Tracker also sends a notification when your desired seat becomes available. Seat Tracker notifications can be sent by email, SMS and push notifications.
14. If your flight was delayed or canceled due to weather or a technical issue…

16. If you realized your passport expired or had less than six months of validity…
It happens to the best of us, but we’re making sure it never happens to TripIt travelers again. With TripIt Pro Passport Renewal Reminder, you’ll receive timely notifications that your passport expiration date is approaching, so you can start the renewal process well ahead of your next international trip.
17. If you needed to change your flight to an earlier time…
TripIt Pro Alternate Flights can help. From the Pro tab in the TripIt app, simply tap Alternate Flights, choose your flight, and search for alternative flights.
You can also customize the search function to search for alternate flights from different departure/arrival airports, and/or within different dates and times. If you find a flight which works for you, contact the airline directly to make the update.
18. If you scrambled to find your rental car information while holding up the check-in line…
Avoid the scramble. Turn on Inbox Sync. That way, you never have to remember to forward an email again, and all of your bookings and confirmations are in the app.
19. If your points or miles expired before you could use them…
TripIt Pro Point Tracker keeps track of your award programs so you don’t have to.
We track your total miles or points and any other details, such as status level, we can find for that program. Point Tracker currently supports more than 150 reward programs, including air, hotel, transportation, parking, dining, and credit card rewards.
20. If your flight was disrupted, and you didn’t know you could get compensated…
At TripIt, we’re always looking to improve your travel experience, and we want to help you when things don't go according to plan. That’s why we partner with AirHelp, a company that specializes in helping air passengers claim compensation for eligible delayed, canceled, and overbooked flights to/from/within the European Union (EU) and Brazil.
If you experience a flight disruption that may be eligible for compensation, TripIt will automatically email you and help you file a claim through AirHelp.
