The year is 2006. To prepare for a trip, you might have booked a flight online—but more likely with a travel agent. You printed out your booking confirmations and boarding passes. And you crossed your fingers that, when you arrived at the airport, your flight was leaving on time.
A group of San Francisco-based folks knew there was a better way to travel. And that’s when the idea for TripIt was born. Twenty years later, TripIt is the travel companion millions of users can’t live without—relying on the app to organize every trip into one connected experience.
It’s been two decades of TripIt and we’re planning to celebrate all year long. We hope you’ll join in as we kick off the festivities, spotlighting award-winning tools, traveler stories, milestones, and new ways to make travel even easier. Keep reading to learn more.
TripIt turns 20: Milestones that mapped our journey
First, let’s take a quick look back. TripIt was founded in San Francisco by Gregg Brockway, Andy Denmark, and Scott Hintz in 2006. But 2009 was a landmark year for us, too: in April of that year we launched our free app for iPhone and iPod users. In June, we launched TripIt Pro. And in November, we introduced our free app for Android users.
A couple years later in 2011, TripIt was acquired by Concur Technologies—which was later acquired by SAP in 2014.
During that time, we released some of our most-loved features:
- In September 2011, we released Point Tracker.
- In March 2012, we launched Nearby Places.
- In May 2013, we released Seat Tracker.
Those features, and the many others we’ve launched since then, have earned us an array of awards. Most recently, we won two Webby Awards: one for Apps & Software, Travel, plus the People’s Voice Winner Apps & Software, Travel.
Celebrating 20 years of TripIt
That brings us to the TripIt of today. In 2026, more than 22 million travelers use TripIt to organize their travel plans. In fact, we’ve hosted more than 214 million itineraries to date. And TripIt travelers have flown over 243 billion miles over the course of two decades. One traveler even set a Guinness World Record with the help of TripIt.
We wouldn’t be hitting these incredible milestones without our global community of travelers. That’s why we’d love to hear from you during this year of celebration. Do you have a favorite travel memory saved in TripIt? Want to share an itinerary you loved? Or a moment TripIt saved your trip?
Snap a screenshot or share a story on social media. Remember to tag us or use #TripIt20 so we can share the moment with other travelers. We can’t wait to hear from you!
