But just like every destination is different, so is every airport. And just as navigating a new city is challenging in and of itself, so is navigating a new airport. Should I go for Ivar’s chowder or Beecher’s mac ‘n cheese at SeaTac? Do I have time to do yoga at SFO’s Terminal 2? How long will it take to get to ATL’s Concourse E for a cocktail at One Flew South?
If you’re anything like us, then these are probably the types of questions you have that perhaps you don’t get push notifications for. But never fear, because we have answers to your airport questions with our series of guides to America’s airports. Today we bring you the TripIt airport guide to Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport.
Just four miles south of Fort Lauderdale and 22 miles north of Miami sits Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport, one of the nation’s top-15 international gateways. It’s the largest hub for Spirit Airlines, and a focus city for JetBlue, Frontier, and Southwest. FLL has four terminals, including Terminal 4, the International Terminal. Miami International still serves many of the region’s long-haul flights, though the last couple decades has seen FLL grow to become an intercontinental gateway. Similar to Miami International Airport, public buses and rail service serve FLL, while the Rental Car Center is located in Terminal 1. Complimentary Wi-Fi is offered throughout the airport without any time restrictions.
The Cuban trend in South Florida airports continues at Fort Lauderdale International Airport with restaurants that include Sergio’s Cuban Café (Terminal 1) and Casavana Café (Terminal 4), both of which serve traditional Cuban dishes, like a selection of empanadas and Cuban sandwiches. Unique to FLL is the Food Network Kitchen (Terminal 3), which offers sandwiches and grab-and-go items, many of which are locally influenced, including their own Cuban sandwich. Other dining options include Shula Burger (Terminal 1) from NFL legend Don Shula, Pei Wei Asian Diner (Terminal 3), Zona Fresca (Terminal 4) for Mexican, and a couple Chili’s Too locations, in Terminal 1 and Terminal 3.
Where to drink at FLL first begins at some of the airport’s restaurants, such as the Food Network Kitchen, which features a full bar, including some craft beer options and locally inspired cocktails. Continuing with the Cuban inspiration, belly up to the bar at Casavana for a mojito. For a more staple airport bar, there’s Landshark in Terminal 1 and Blue Bar in Terminal 3, both of which have a full bar (and food items, too). Elsewhere, Shula Burger features a beer menu with some local and regional craft beer selections, and also offers beer and wine pairings. Other spots you can get a drink include Chili’s Too and Kafé Kalik (Terminal 4), a Caribbean-themed restaurant and bar.
Fort Lauderdale International Airport has a number of local and designer shops, including Discovery Fort Lauderdale (Terminal 1), Brooks Brothers (Terminal 3), and duty-free shops in each terminal. Throughout each of the terminals you’ll find public art and design showcases, as well as an art gallery, Lee Wagener Art Gallery, in Terminal 2 before security. The upside to Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport, however, is its proximity to Fort Lauderdale’s best attractions, since travelers can be to the beach or downtown Fort Lauderdale in 10-15 minutes. Additionally, you can store your bags at the airport and hop on the complimentary Sun Trolley, which picks up and drops off at the airport daily during daylight hours, transporting guests to downtown Fort Lauderdale.
Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport has a couple airline lounges, United Club in Terminal 1 and Delta Sky Club in Terminal 2.
