Instagram is becoming the go-to social media for many people because it speaks a novel without saying a word. Basically, it’s easy to look at a photo and gauge what you need to know to like, follow, comment or keep scrolling. Now I don’t consider myself an Instagram expert, but I did grow my following to over by 25,000 in 15 months and it wasn’t luck. I did a lot of trial and error to see what my audience likes keeping in mind what I like because it’s my account and I learned by experience. So for your next big trip here’s a few tips to really improve your Instagram game.
Know Your Audience
If you’re just a casual user of Instagram and aren’t trying to grow your audience and your followers are your friends and family then skip to the next tip. However, if you want to reach more people and engage the ones that currently follow you, you must know what they like. Not just what they like but what made them follow you in the first place. Remember, it’s your account and you can put up whatever you want but if engagement and followers is something you covet then think about what your audience likes. The best way to do this is by trial and error. Try a few things over a few weeks at different times of day and see what happens. Get rid of the photos that bomb and keep and learn from the ones that do well.
Edit Your Photos
It always amuses me when someone calls me out for editing my photos as if that’s a bad thing. Cameras, no matter how fancy, can’t do scenery justice without editing. Every great photo you see online or in magazines was edited. Editing takes good photos to great and great to excellent. I recommend Snapseed for editing on iPhone. I think it’s the best editing app and very simple to use. I also occasionally use CP Pro but mostly for lightening people when a photo is taken of people in bad lighting.
Post Photos of Cool Places of Things
Casual users can post photos of their pets or lunch and it’s no big deal but unless people follow you for your pet or your food tastes then most people aside from your actual friends will take a casual pass on the photo. Whereas, if you post a well edited photo in a cool place, doing something interesting that piques peoples interest-that can cause them to like the photo and maybe even comment “cool” or give you an awesome emoji. Additionally, if it’s really cool then they’ll tag their friends in your post; which helps you get more followers and likes and comments.
Take Instagram Seriously
If growing your following is important to you then you have to work at it and make the effort to do the steps I mentioned above. Unless you’re a famous celebrity, people just won’t follow you for no reason; especially, people who don’t know you. Instagram takes time to build up a following and to find out what works for you. It’s a constant work-in-progress but it can be really fun!
You have to earn peoples’ follow and likes by staying true to yourself, knowing your audience, taking and editing great photos of cool things and places or whatever your niche is. Mine is travel so I post travel photos and use relevant hashtags and location stamps; which I also recommend.
Some photos have me in them, some don’t, and I find the ones that do best only have me in them if I’m doing something awesome in an awesome place. So if you’re going to an awesome place and you want to step up your Instagram game, take heed of this post and have at it as there’s never a better time to get new followers than when you’re traveling! Good luck!
