Being able to stay fit while traveling is hard. If you travel a lot for work or for pleasure, you know this is one of the biggest challenges you’ll face on the road. Different time zones, different hotel beds, exhaustion, corporate dinners, and desserts. They all add up and make it hard to stay motivated and energized to exercise. Trust me–I know better than most about this topic and here are six ways how I stay fit while traveling.
- Don’t Do Dessert
Desserts are a killer, and in your normal life at home, you rarely have dessert. So, why change when on the road or on vacation? Remember that calories count when you’re on the road as well; even though we like to think they don’t. Desserts, especially heavy cakes and pies, can have twice the calories and fat as your meal , so stay away!
- Do Basic Exercises Each Day
I know it’s hard to stay motivated to exercise when you’re traveling for work or on vacation— trust me I do it professionally! But it doesn’t take that much effort to roll out of bed first thing in the morning and do some basic exercises like crunches and push ups. If that’s not your thing, do what makes you comfortable, even if it’s just stretching or some yoga moves. Also, take the stairs, do some walking, and just get your blood flowing. Travel is tough on your body so make sure you tune it as much as you can, even if it’s just the basics.
- Drink Water
This is my biggest downfall. When you’re tired, you generally tend to want some type of caffeine and lean toward coffee or a soda. These are awful for you, and I’m as big a Starbucks addict as anyone, but you must hydrate yourself and drink water. Try drinking water in the morning instead of coffee. You’ll feel better and won’t come down to hit a wall. Stay hydrated. Flying dehydrates you and so does all the moving around. Remember to drink water and avoid those energy drinks.

- Maintain Your Routine
Just because you’re traveling doesn’t mean you have an excuse to duck out of your routine. You need to stay positive and keep up your fitness and eating routines. I see it all the time in people who travel a lot for work. They pack on pounds because it’s easier to just give in. Sometimes it’s really hard to say no to great food, especially on a work trip where you’re not paying, but you must be disciplined, stay positive, and keep your routine to stay fit while traveling.
- Avoid Negative People
I really dislike negative people. They’re such a buzzkill and try to bring down everyone around them. Just avoid or ignore them. Stay positive and don’t be drawn into overeating, drinking, or being lazy. Listen to yourself and don’t be influenced by negativity from co-workers or even family members you may be traveling with. Negative people bring you down–avoid them!
- Don’t Drink Too Much
This is a tough one for most people when they travel, as they see it as an excuse to get wasted and go out partying, whether it be on vacation or on the corporate card. That’s fine, but drinking gives you hangovers which make you feel crummy and lazy. Too much beer will also pack on pounds, and it’s just not healthy. I like to have some drinks as much as anyone, but you must manage your levels and be smart. Just don’t drink too much … you can always go to the bar another night.
