Traveling for business can be fun and exciting, especially in the beginning. But if you travel frequently, whether it’s short distances like LA to San Francisco or longer hauls, crossing the country or traveling internationally, frequent flying can get tiring and leave you feeling in less than optimal shape to face a day of meetings. Try these 10 tips on for size to help you look presentable after a flight and ready to hit the ground running:
Book Your Flight With Enough Time
If you have a morning or early afternoon meeting, you might want to fly in the day of, but do you really want to miss your meeting because of a flight delay or cancellation? Factor this in and decide whether flying in the night before is more prudent. You won’t likely feel “meeting ready” if you’re making a frazzled dash from the airport to the office.
Book a Car Service
Eat Healthy Snacks
All the sodium in pretzels and other common airline snacks can leave you feeling bloated and sluggish. So pass on the peanuts and opt for healthier options like veggies and hummus or fresh fruit.
Alcohol can also leave you feeling tired or worse, give you a buzz that’s not quite business meeting appropriate. Save the booze until after your meeting and instead, opt for water on your flight, which will leave you feeling hydrated and refreshed.
If you’re on a long flight or a red-eye, you may be tempted to pop a sleeping pill to help you get some shut-eye. But while sleep aids can help you to sleep, they can leave you feeling groggy and irritable when it’s time to wake up. If you absolutely can’t sleep without the help of an aid, talk to your doctor about better alternatives.
Sit in a Window Seat
If you really need to get some sleep, book a window seat so that you’re not disturbed every time the drink cart goes by or your seatmate needs to use the bathroom.
Wear Your Glasses
If you normally wear contact lenses, swap them out for your glasses on the flight. Wearing contact lenses on a flight can seriously dry out your eyes, especially if you fall asleep with them in. Instead, wear your glasses on the plane, then put your contact lenses in when you land. Your eyes will thank you!
No one likes flying in restrictive clothing but if you’re short on time, there may be no time to change between landing and getting to your meeting. But you can wear comfortable shoes to travel in and slip into your dress shoes just before landing. Likewise, wear a comfy sweater on the plane and swap it for your blazer once you’re on the ground.
Wear Non-Wrinkle Clothes
Certain fabrics like silk and linen should be avoided when you’re flying; they wrinkle way too easily. Instead, opt for clothing made from wool, cashmere and yes, even polyester, each of which generally refuses to rumple. Plus, many stores offer wrinkle-resistant clothing; check out TravelSmith and Banana Republic’s line of men’s wrinkle-free shirts and non-iron dress shirts.
Pack Travel-size Toiletries
After your flight, duck into the bathroom and freshen up using all the handy travel-size toiletries you were smart enough to pack! Brush your teeth, comb your hair and even shave if you need to. A little bit of grooming can go a long way to waking you up and making you feel rejuvenated before you face the day.
