It’s the month of love and my husband Dave and I have traveled the world in search of the most romantic destinations. So for this Valentine’s Day, we thought we’d round up our favorites for our pals at TripIt. Who knows, maybe you’ll find yourself in one of these cities of love in 2016.
Dave’s picks: Most Romantic Destinations
#3 Paris, France
A romantic city round up would never be complete without including Paris. It’s the city of love. With fine French foods and win, beautiful architecture and endless entertainment, Paris is always at the top of our go-to romantic travel destination.
#2 Udaipur, India
Udaipur is considered India’s most romantic city and with good reason. It’s a picturesque setting surrounding Lake Pichola with lake palaces in both the center of the lake and along its banks. The whitewashed buildings make for a perfect setting to sit at a café along the river watching life go by in this colorful town.
#1 Santorini, Greece
Dave and I had to fight over choosing Santorini as our number one romantic destination because we both love it. Booking a cave hotel high above the caldera is a must. With breakfasts served on your own private balcony complete with Greek yogurt, fresh honey and rich coffee, it’s the perfect way to start your day. Santorini is filled with infinity pools overlooking the high cliffs and once you finish your sightseeing for the day, there’s nothing better than retreating into your luxury accommodation for a romantic candlelight dinner followed by a dip in your private soaking pool.
Deb’s Picks: Most Romantic Destinations
#3 Venice, Italy
With romantic gondola rides complete with singing gondoliers, how can we not choose Venice as a top romantic destination? Getting lost in the back alleyways is part of the charm of visiting Venice. You must stay in Venice for a few days to really understand its charm. When the package tours and cruise lines disappear, the city is your romantic playground. Dinner on a piazza is a must followed by drinks along the Grand Canal. Oh Venice, how we love you.
#2 West Lake, China
Niagara Falls may be the honeymoon capital of Canada, but in China it’s a place called West Lake. Newlyweds and lovebirds flock to West Lake to stroll the shores with the one they love. The reason it’s so popular is because of the legend of the White Snake. It’s a classic tale of doomed love. The White Snake married a mortal human and once he saw her true form, he died instantly. Overcome with despair, the White Snake begged for his life. He was given a second chance, but the penalty was for him to become a monk trapped in the Jin Shan Temple and imprisoned the White Snake in the Thunder Peak Pagoda by West Lake. Their love never died and eventually they were avenged and reunited, proving that love can last through the years.
#1 Maui, Hawaii
There’s something about sunshine and palm trees that always makes me very happy. Maui has plenty of both and while staying in the beautiful Fairmont Kea Lani, we enjoyed one of our most romantic travels in quite some time. The beachfront setting and stunning sunsets put you in the mood for love. Each morning we walked along the water hand in hand enjoying the tranquility of the island before the hustle and bustle began. Sharing a shaved ice and enjoying ice cream, we put all our worries away for a week in paradise.
There are many romantic destinations around the world and each year our list changes. It’s nearly impossible to just choose three, but for 2016, these are our top choices. What are yours? Do you have a favorite romantic destination that you’ll never forget? We’d love some more ideas so tell us in the comments below.
