It seems like in 2015 everybody and their grandmother went to Iceland. A lot of others went to Page, Arizona or to Prague, Oman, Jordan, Cuba or Morocco. In my view, those are all old news and people should consider going not necessarily where’s to travel to in 2016, but to some incredible places you might not see popping up on your Instagram feed.
I have been saying for two years now that Egypt is the place to go these days. Everyone knows about the history and famous landmarks of Egypt, but many are afraid to go because of political unrest. I can assure you the Egyptians would never let anything happen to a tourist and that you’re very safe in there.
Egypt is absolutely wonderful, from the Pyramids in Cairo, Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel to the stunning Red Sea resorts. You can’t go wrong unless you don’t go! Prices in Egypt have never been cheaper for luxury hotels and there are flights from New York and all over Europe. There’s no reason not to go. Egypt should top your list for 2016 even when you see others going.
I’ve been to Kenya twice before and each time the experience got better. I will be back in January 2016 so I’m practicing what I preach. A slew of awesome new hotels have opened in recent years and the Masai Mara, animals, friendly people, good food and stunning beaches south of Mombasa haven’t changed. The time to go to Kenya is now.
That long, skinny country running up the Andes in South America is Chile and it’s one of the best countries in the world to visit. Unfortunately, many people know nothing about it. In Chile, you literally go from the Atacama Desert, the driest place on Earth, all the way down to Patagonia and Antarctica. Not to mention, everything in between is fantastic like the great beaches, tremendous vineyards, lake regions and a great city like Santiago. Oh, and did I mention Easter Island? Go to Chile now!
The days of Pablo Escobar are long gone and Colombia is a safe, cosmopolitan place to visit. The food is sensational, the cities are electric and Cartagena is easily one of my favorite places in the world. Colombia has snuck up on peoples’ radar in the past few years, but the time to go is now.
The top place that I want to return to as soon as possible is Mongolia. This massive Asian country is chock full of nature and incredible scenery. I only got a taste when I was there a few years ago and you need time to drive out and explore this burgeoning playground. Mongolia is at the top of my list and should be up there on yours as well.
