If you’re a luxury traveler in need of a getaway but have a budget to stick to, there are several destinations where you can find four or five star hotels for a reasonable price. Don’t think that you need to blow the bank in order to have a luxury vacation—the trick is picking the right time to go. Head to these destinations during their low or shoulder season, when hotels and airlines will slash rates and offer discounts. Travelers can also find great deals at restaurants, shops, and general attractions. Here are my luxury budget travel suggestions:
December – February
Winter doesn’t necessarily mean chilly weather. Escape the cold and head to the Dominican Republic. In the country’s capital, SantoDomingo, hotel rates are some of the lowest in the Caribbean during winter. You can snag a room at the five-star Hotel Frances Santo Domingo for as low as US$119 per night. For those looking for a snowy winter, head to Iceland where low season prices fall as far as 40 percent in winter’s low season compared to the high season in summer. Hotel Rangá, a four-star luxury hotel, offers a 30 percent discount on a four-night stay between September and April.
March – May
With the exception of spring break, there are several destinations that offer great deals during the springtime. Try Jamaica, as the country is just coming out of its winter peak season. Somewhere from mid-April to early May prices begin to drop. Travelers can find great deals on airfare and hotels. At the Mercure Playa de Oro, rates start for as low as US$66 per night compared to the high winter season when rates start at US$115 per night at this all-inclusive hotel.
June – August
While Mexico can offer incredible deals for vacations all year round, summer sees a significant drop in rates and all-inclusive packages. In Playa del Carmen, you can stay at some of the best hotels at bargain prices. Winter and spring are Playa’s peak season. After the crowds have gone and temperatures have risen, prices begin to drop. Check into the Viceroy Riviera Maya for rates starting at less than US$400 per night compared to high season when rates can start as high as US$720 per night.
September – November
During the fall months, head to the increasingly popular Belize for low season, where you can find the best deals and reduced prices in exchange for dealing with the country’s rainy season. Think of diving in Belize’s Great Barrier Reef, exploring Mayan pyramids, uncovering hidden caves, and trekking through the rainforests. The Hamanasi Adventure & Dive Resort starts at $251 per night during low season compares to $398 during high season.
