I haven't received my verification email yet!
Yahoo! Mail and Hotmail sometimes deliver the TripIt verification email to your junk mail folder, so if you haven't received your verification email, please check your junk mail folder.
You can also have the verification email re-sent to you. First, we recommend you add support@tripit.com to your safe senders list. Then, click the "Don't know your password?" link below to have a new verification email sent to you.
If you continue to have problems, click the "feedback" link at the top of this page to let us know. One of our team members will help you get verified.
Do I need an account?
Yes! To use TripIt for trip planning, you need an account with a valid email address and password (this is how we protect your personal information from being viewed by others.)
How much does TripIt cost?
Nothing – TripIt is a free service for travelers like you to enjoy.
How can I create an account?
There are two ways to create a TripIt account.
- Click the "sign up" link at the top of the page to manually create an account.
- Email a travel booking to plans@tripit.com and we'll automatically create an account for you. You'll receive an email confirmation with temporary sign in information.
Why do I have to verify my account?
We need to verify that you're the owner of the email address used during sign up. We send an email to that address, asking you to respond and verify you own the email account.
This protects you from someone else setting up a TripIt account with your email address.
My Account
How do I change my account settings?
Click the "My Account" link at the top of the page (it only shows up when you are signed in) to change your screen name, add email addresses, change your email subscription preferences, and more.
How do I sign in?
Click the "login" link at the top of the page. You can sign in using any of the verified email addresses associated with your account, and you need your password.
If you forget your password, reset it by clicking the "Don't know your password?" link when you try to sign in.
What if I forgot my sign in and/or password?
If you forget your password, reset it by clicking the "Don't know your password?" link when you try to sign in.
If you forget your email address, try an alternate address you may have used during sign up. If you still cannot remember which email address you used and are unable to sign in, you can create a new account -- but you can't access any of the trip details from your original account.
What if I changed my email address?
Add or remove email addresses associated with your account at any time on the "My Account" page. There, you can specify which of your email addresses we should use as your primary address for communicating with you.
Getting Started
What should I do first?
It depends on where you are in your trip planning process.
If you are not currently planning a trip...
- Sign up for an account if you haven't already.
- Setup TripClipper to add things like restaurants, activities, and reviews from other web sites to your TripPlan.
If you are currently planning a trip but have not booked travel yet...
- Open an account with TripIt, if you haven't already done so.
- Click the TripSearch tab at the top of the page, and use TripSearch to comparison shop for travel across several web sites.
- Setup TripClipper to add things like restaurants, activities, and reviews from other web sites to your TripPlan.
- Create a TripPlan so you can save bookings and TripClips related to this trip.
If you are currently planning a trip and have already booked some travel...
- Forward any of the purchase confirmation emails you have for this trip to plans@tripit.com . We'll respond with an email including a link to the TripPlan for this trip.
- View your TripPlan and add maps, weather, driving directions – whatever you like to take care of the basics of your trip.
- Click the TripSearch tab at the top of the page, and use TripSearch to comparison shop for travel across several web sites.
- Setup TripClipper to add things like restaurants, activities, and reviews from other web sites to your TripPlan.
I don't have any immediate travel plans -- is TripIt still useful?
Yes! If you're like us, you're always on the lookout for travel ideas for a future trip. Just as you use a notebook to keep track of ideas, or a folder to store articles, you can use TripIt to organize all of your travel planning ideas.
There are several ways to store travel planning ideas.
- Use TripClipper to save articles, reviews, and other content from web sites.
- Create a Note to capture thoughts and ideas -- whatever you want, including images and website URLs.
- Add Maps so you can visualize your destination and plan the things you'd like to see while you're there.
You can add TripClips, Notes, and Maps to a TripPlan you've already created, or leave them unfiled and add them to a trip you create later.
Creating a TripPlan
What is a TripPlan?
A TripPlan is a single web page with all your trip details. Organized by day, it's a step-by-step guide to the things you've planned, plus notes you want on hand during the trip.
A TripPlan is like an itinerary, but better. In addition to organizing your flights, hotels, rental cars, and other typical travel components, it also includes maps, weather, driving directions, and more. Share this with Connections or fellow travelers, and even give others the ability to add comments or their own items to the TripPlan. TripIt also gives you helpful options for printing your itinerary so all your information is at your fingertips while you're on the road, in a concise and easy-to-read format.
How can I setup a new trip?
There are two easy ways to start a new TripPlan:
- Forward a flight, hotel, or rental car booking email to plans@tripit.com We'll automatically setup a new TripPlan and will email you a link so you can see and manage it.
- Click the "Create New Trip" link at the top of the "MyTrips" page. Just enter a few basics about your trip and your plan will be created right away.
What can I add to my TripPlan?
You can add virtually anything you want to your TripPlan.
- Introduction – trip title, description, photo, and traveler names.
- Bookings – automatically import flight, hotel, and car bookings made on other sites, or enter them manually. Click the "Add Plans" link from anywhere in your TripPlan.
- Integrated Content – TripIt integrates maps, weather, and driving directions right in your TripPlan. Just click the "Add Plans" link from anywhere in your TripPlan.
- TripClips – capture almost anything from web sites and store it in your TripPlan. Grab articles, reviews, lists, and more from your favorite sites. You can even add photos and website URLs.
- Notes – create a note with reminders, ideas, directions, pictures – whatever you want. Store and organize notes in your TripPlan so they're on hand when you need them.
- Comments – you and anyone you've invited to view your TripPlan can add comments to your trip.
Adding Travel Bookings
Which booking sites does TripIt support?
Currently, TripIt works with bookings from the largest airlines, hotels, car rental companies, and online travel agencies. See Booking Sites for the full list.
What if I booked on a site that TripIt doesn't support?
If you've booked on a site TripIt doesn't yet support, you can enter your booking information manually. Click the "Add Plans" link in your TripPlan and select the booking type.
How do I import a booking into my TripPlan?
Forward your booking confirmation email to plans@tripit.com. It's that simple.
We'll automatically add your imported booking, either into a TripPlan or as an Unfiled Item (depending on your account settings). Then we'll send you a confirmation email with a link to the TripPlan. You can move bookings from one TripPlan to another at any time.
If your import doesn't work, you can always manually enter your booking information. Click the "Add Plans" link in your TripPlan and select the booking type to get started.
Why did you automatically place my imported booking in a TripPlan?
Imported bookings are automatically added to a TripPlan by default.
You can disable this feature on the "My Account" page by deselecting the checkbox next to "Auto-import email confirmations I forward to plans@tripit.com into trips".
What do I do if TripIt places my imported booking into the wrong trip?
TripIt matches your imported bookings with existing trips in your account based on dates of travel. If your newly imported booking has travel dates that overlap with more than one of your existing TripIt itineraries, then the booking could get matched with the wrong trip. But it's easy to move that booking to the correct trip by clicking the "move" link in the upper right corner of the item you'd like to move.
Why does my trip invitation expire?
When you import a booking into TripIt, we respond with an email that includes a link. As a security measure, that link can only be used once, and must be used within 7 days.
How do I view my trip if the invitation has expired?
If you click an expired link, you will be asked to sign in to TripIt. Once you are logged in, you can view imported bookings on the "MyTrips" page. The email link is just a convenience for you -- the booking is still imported whether you click it or not.
Where does TripIt get flight information that it adds to my booking?
Sometimes the amount of flight information in your original booking confirmation email is very limited. You might notice that TripIt often adds other details, such as aircraft type, meal, and entertainment information.
We get this information from the same source that supplies many airports and industry booking systems, a leading provider of airline schedules for the travel industry. While this source is considered very reliable, double check your imported bookings to ensure they are accurate.
How does TripIt handle schedule changes?
If your airline or booking site notifies you of a schedule change to your flight, you can update your booking information with TripIt.
At this time, schedule changes are not handled automatically - you must manually change your booking if you want the new scheduling information in your TripPlan.
Locate the flight you wish to update (either from the TripPlan or the Unfiled Items) and click the "edit" link. You can then edit details, such as flight numbers, dates, departure and arrival times, and more.
Does TripIt sell travel?
No! TripIt does not sell travel -- there are already many good places to book flights, hotels, and cars on the Internet.
We believe you should be able to book wherever you want, choosing from among your favorite sites over time. Our goal is let you to book anywhere, and then group all your travel plans together into a single TripPlan.
We make shopping easy, however, with our TripSearch tool . Enter your travel details once and comparison shop across multiple travel web sites easily.
Managing TripPlans
How do I change the TripPlan title, description, and photo?
You can update the introductory section of a TripPlan by clicking the "edit" link for the TripPlan on the "MyTrips" page, or by selecting "edit trip details" in the "More Tools" menu on the TripPlan.
How do I add maps and driving directions?
Click the "add plans" link within the TripPlan and select "map/directions".
Why do maps automatically appear in my TripPlans?
TripIt automatically generates common maps people need during trips. Click the "delete" link next to any map you want to remove.
What does the weather information in my TripPlan represent?
The weather information you see in your TripPlan is based on historical averages for that day over the past 25 years. You'll see average low and high temperatures for that day, plus an icon to indicate an above-average likelihood of precipitation (snow or rain) or high winds. Please note that average weather data is not the same as a forecast, which can vary greatly from historical conditions. Because forecast information is generally only available for the next week, TripIt uses historical averages to help you plan for weather far in advance of your trip.
How do I add and change weather displayed in my TripPlan?
TripIt automatically shows typical weather for each day in your TripPlan, based on historical averages. This information cannot be deleted, but you can edit the cities it refers to by clicking "edit weather" from the "More Tools" link on the TripPlan. Or, click the "edit" link next to any weather icon in the TripPlan.
What are notes and how do I create them?
A Note is a general information holder you add to a TripPlan. Notes may include a title, text, images, dates, and website URLs. Enter whatever you like – ideas, thoughts, recommendations, reminders – and add the notes where they are most useful.
Notes keep track of things you may have previously tried to remember – for example, a friend tells you about a restaurant. Instead of relying on memory, create a Note immediately when your friend tells you about the restaurant, and you'll have that information right in your TripPlan – no extra pieces of paper to carry, no risk of forgetting.
To create a Note, click the "add plans" link in the TripPlan and select "Add Note".
Can I change the order in which information is displayed in my TripPlan?
Yes! Items are displayed in chronological order in your TripPlan. By changing the date and time of each item in your travel plan, you can specify the display order. Click "edit" next to any trip item to change the date or time assigned to it.
How do I change the level of detail displayed in my travel bookings?
There are two levels of detail for each item in your trip plan:
- Summary view -- includes a basic one or two line description only.
- Detail view -- includes all available details for the travel event, including full-sized images, maps, detailed bookings, etc.
To switch from a summary to a detail view, click the "Expand" icon next to the travel event. You can also change the entire TripPlan at once by selecting the "Details: Summary" or "Details: Expanded" buttons near the top of the page.
How do comments work?
Any user with access to a TripPlan can read and add comments to a trip. All comments are visible by all trip participants.
Click the "add comment" link in the "Recent Comments" area to add a comment.
How do "flight check-in" and "flight status" work?
If your TripPlan includes a flight booking, TripIt usually adds "Check Flight Status" and "Check-in Online" links for the flight. Clicking these takes you to the airline's web site, and automatically sends your flight information if possible. These links save you time, since you don't need to learn how different airlines handle these tasks on their sites.
If the airline doesn't have a website, or they don't offer flight status and/or check-in functionality on their site, then these buttons may not appear in your TripPlan.
How can I keep track of the changes made to my trips?
Click the "new activity updates" link in the upper right corner of any page to see what changes have been made recently to your trips. This is a helpful feature for keeping track of changes your friends may have made to trips you share with them. You can also access your activity feed by clicking the "recent activity" tab within "MyTrips".
Sharing TripPlans
How does sharing work?
There are two levels of permissions you can give to people who share your plans:
- Viewer – invite someone to see your TripPlan, but they can't edit or add items (except for comments). This is generally used for people who are not traveling.
- Collaborator -- these people can view, edit, delete, and add to your TripPlan. This is generally for people traveling who may need to add bookings or other items in collaboration with you.
To share your TripPlan with others, click the "share this trip" button in your TripPlan and follow the instructions. You can invite one or more people at a time, and can also indicate if they are travelers for this trip.
Recipients must click the link in the invitation email within 7 days, after which time the invitation expires. The email invitation link is valid for one use only.
You can view all outstanding trip sharing invitations, or cancel outstanding invites, by selecting "Manage People" from the "More Tools" menu of the TripPlan.
Can I remove people from TripPlans?
Yes! To remove people from a trip, click the "More Tools" button on the TripPlan page and select "Manage People". Then click the "remove" link for the person you want to remove.
Can I remove myself from someone else's TripPlan?
Yes! To remove yourself from a trip where you accepted an invitation, click the "remove" link next to the trip name on your "MyTrips" page.
Can I cancel a sharing invitation?
Yes! To cancel a sharing invitation, click the "More Tools" button on the TripPlan page and select "Manage People". Then click the "remove" link for the person you want to remove from the trip.
How do I re-send an invitation that has expired?
The link in a sharing invitation email expires within 7 days as a security measure, and it is valid for one time use only. After 7 days, the invitee may still access the trip you've shared with him, but he can only do so by logging into TripIt, where he will then see the trip on his "MyTrips" page.
If you'd like to send the recipient another invitation that will be good for an additional 7 days, go to the "Manage People" page, accessed through the "More Tools" menu of the TripPlan. For any invitee who has not yet viewed the trip, you will see a link that says "re-invite." Simply click that "re-invite" link and the recipient will be sent another invitation to view the trip.
How can other people add their bookings to my TripPlan?
Another TripIt member may add bookings to your TripPlan as long as you've previously given them "Collaborator" access to the trip. This will ensure that your trip will be shown in their "MyTrips" list, and they can add bookings directly to the trip, or attach Unfiled bookings to the trip by clicking "Attach to Trip" for the booking on the "Unfiled Items" page.
My Network
What is a TripIt "Connection"?
A Connection in TripIt is someone you want to share information with about where you are going. Your Connections will automatically be able to see a list of the destinations associated with your TripIt itineraries, and you can see the same for your Connections. Click on the MyNetwork tab to see a list of your Connections and their travel plans. You can also click the calendar tab within MyNetwork to see this information in a convenient calendar format.
You can easily find out when your travel plans overlap with your Connections' using our Who's Close feature. This is great for knowing if you might be in the same place at the same time as one of your friends. Meet up for dinner or coffee while you're both in town. Email your friend after a trip to ask how they liked the destination. Or wish a friend bon voyage when you see they have an upcoming trip.
How do I add and remove Connections?
To add a Connection in TripIt, just login and click the "Add Connections" link on the MyNetwork tab. Next, enter your friends' email addresses and TripIt will send them invitations to connect with you on TripIt.
To remove a Connection from your network, go to the MyNetwork tab and click the "remove" link that appears under the person's name.
Can my Connections see all my trip details?
No, your Connections cannot see all your trip details unless you specifically share your TripPlan with them. Connections can only see the cities you are planning to visit on your trip (e.g., "New York") and the date you'll be there.
If you want someone to see your entire TripPlan, including your detailed flights, hotels, notes, etc., you need to share the trip with them. Go to your TripPlan and click the "share this trip" button to share the trip with another user.
How can I prevent my Connections from seeing my trip locations?
Each time you create or edit a trip in your account, your TripIt Connections will be able to see the travel dates and locations associated with your trip and may be alerted when your travel plans overlap with theirs. If you don't want your Connections to see this information for a specific trip, you can enable that trip's privacy setting.
Go to the TripPlan you wish to keep private and select the "edit trip details" option in the "more tools" menu. On the next screen, you'll see an option for marking the trip private. Check the box next to the privacy option and then click the "save" button on the page.
What's the difference between a Connection and someone I share a trip with?
A Connection in TripIt automatically sees the destination and travel dates for every trip in your account. It's a small amount of information that gets shared, but it is automatically broadcast to your entire Connection network (unless you set a specific trip to "private").
In contrast, when you share a trip with someone, that person can see all the details of that specific trip – your exact flights, hotels, notes, maps, etc. When you add someone to your trip as a viewer or collaborator, that person sees a lot of information about your trip, but you have to add each of these trip sharees individually to the trips you wish to share.
What does it mean when TripIt tells me that a Connection may be close to me?
A Connection is considered to be close to you if they are planning to be in a city that is less than or equal to 20 miles from a city that you're planning to be in on that same day.
What does it mean when TripIt tells me that a Connection may be visiting my Home Location?
A Connection may be visiting your Home Location if they are planning to be in a city that is less than or equal to 20 miles from your Home Location on any date when you are not traveling.
How do I update my Home Location?
Click the "My Account" link at the top of the page (it only shows up when you are signed in) and enter/edit the city in the "Home Location" field.
Alerts and Activity Feeds
Can I subscribe to TripIt Activity Feeds?
Yes! TripIt has two Activity Feeds available through Atom. You can subscribe to 'My Alerts' and/or 'My Activity' feeds.
What's the difference? While logged in to your account, you can subscribe by clicking the
icon.
What is an Atom feed and how can I use it?
Atom feeds, which are similar to RSS feeds, are a way to get information automatically sent from one website (like TripIt) to another website (like My Yahoo). Put simply, an Atom feed is a website with a list of small 'stories.' (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atom_feed for more information on Atom feeds)
In our case, these 'stories' would be about TripIt activity associated with you and your Connections. You can use a news aggregator (like Google Reader, Bloglines, MyYahoo, etc...) to subscribe to the feed. Your news aggregator will check periodically for updates to the feed and display new stories to you, so you'll always know what's going on in TripIt, even if you're not logged into the site.
What's the difference between the 'My Alerts' and 'My Activity' feeds?
My Alerts:
The content in this feed matches the content in the Alerts tab on our site. Think of it as a news feed that helps you keep track of things that are happening within your TripIt account. This feed will post stories when:
- Anyone in your network has made a new connection.
- Someone has sent you a Connection Invitation.
- Any of your Connections are planning a new trip, just returning from a trip or about to leave on a trip.
- Another Collaborator on your trip has posted comments or made changes to a trip.
My Activity:
This feed contains information about things you've done in TripIt. This feed will post stories when:
- You have made new Connections
- You are planning a new trip, just returning from a trip or about to leave on a trip.
Do others have access to my Atom feed URLs?
No. Your Atom feed URLs are not available to anyone who is not logged into your account. No one (not even your TripIt Connections) will have access to these feeds unless you send the URLs to them outside of TripIt. Please be aware that your Atom feed URLs cannot be refreshed or changed at this time, so passing the address on to others is not advised.
Location Streams
What is a location stream?
A location stream is a continuously updated stream of information about when and where someone is traveling.
When you build a network of Connections in TripIt, you can use location streams to easily keep track of where your Connections are going, and when. When logged into TripIt, you can see this information in the MyNetwork section of TripIt in a list format in your Connections List or by date on the Calendar pages.
We know you can't use TripIt 24/7 (although we'd love it if you did) so we've also made it possible to access location streams without having to login to TripIt. If you use a calendar that supports the iCalendar (iCal) standard (such as Outlook 2007 or Google Calendar) then you can view your TripIt Connections' travel plans right there in that application, anytime. The information is kept up to date via a live feed between TripIt and your calendar, so it's a very convenient way to keep track of your fellow travelers!
Does TripIt support formats other than iCal?
At this time, TripIt's location stream only works with calendar applications that support the iCal format.
How do I change my location stream settings?
Login to TripIt and go to the My Account page. From there, you'll see a section for My Calendar Feed, and an option called "Status" where you can turn your location stream on by selecting "Publish my feed for me AND publish my location stream for my TripIt Connections." And don't worry, any trips marked as private are automatically excluded.
Why don't I see a location stream for one of my TripIt Connections?
On the MyNetwork tab, you'll see a list of your TripIt Connections and each one with location streams turned on will have a "location stream" link beneath their name. If you don't see the "location stream" link beneath one of your contact's names, then that person has their location stream turned off and you will not be able to subscribe to their travel calendar.
How do I get a Connection's location stream into my calendar?
To add a location stream for one of your Connections to your calendar application, consult your calendar application's instructions for setting up iCal feeds. You will need to supply your calendar application with a URL for each calendar to which you'd like to subscribe. You can find these URLs by going to the MyNetwork tab and clicking the "location stream" link beneath the name of the Connection you'd like to add to your calendar.
You can read more about calendar feeds, and also see sample setup instructions for major calendar applications on the "more about iCal feeds" page.
My Calendar Feed
What is my calendar feed?
TripIt's "My Calendar Feed automatically adds your trip destinations, travel dates, and all the details of your TripPlan right to the calendar application you use every day.
If you use a calendar program that supports the iCalendar (iCal) standard such as Outlook 2007, Google Calendar, or Apple's iCal, among others, you can turn the items in your TripPlan into events in your calendar without having to manually re-enter all of the details. Even better, once you set up your calendar feed, which should take less than 1 minute, the information is automatically kept up to date via a live feed between TripIt and your calendar. Any changes you make to your TripPlan will be automatically updated with your calendar!
Does TripIt support formats other than iCal?
At this time, TripIt's calendar feed only works with calendar applications that support the iCal format.
How do I change my calendar feed settings?
Login to TripIt and go to the My Account page. From there, you'll see a section for calendar feeds, where you can choose what level of information is included in your calendar feed, and choose how you want your calendar feed to handle multiple time zones.
How do I setup My Calendar feed?
By default, your calendar feed is turned on so that you can get all the details from your TripPlans in your calendar program of your choice and your Connections can subscribe to your location stream.
To add your calendar feed to your calendar application, consult your calendar application's instructions for setting up iCal feeds. You will need to supply your calendar application with a URL for your TripIt calendar. You can find this URL by going to MyNetwork tab and clicking the "calendar feed" link beneath where it says "Me."
You can read more about calendar feeds, and also see sample setup instructions for major calendar applications on the "more about iCal feeds" page.
Which calendar clients support the iCalendar standard?
Here are some of the more common calendar programs that support the iCalendar standard, however, this is not an exhaustive list.
- Microsoft Outlook 2007
- Google Calendar
- Apple iCal

I made changes to my Trip Plan, why don't I see them in my Google Calendar?
Be patient. Due to the way Google has chosen to build their calendar, it can take a couple of hours before you will see changes reflected in Google Calendar. This is not specific to TripIt.
Why do I see send/receive errors in Outlook 2007?
If you use Outlook 2007 and you have chosen to "ignore time zones" in your calendar feed, Outlook 2007 may incorrectly report errors referencing "floating DTSTART" or "floating DTEND," while sending and receiving your calendar feed. You can just ignore these as there isn't actually anything wrong.
I don't like the way an event is showing up in my calendar, how can I change it?
That depends. Pretty much all of the event's settings and details comes from information found in that event in TripIt, some of which you can change, some of which you can't. If you find something you don't like or want to see in a different way and can't change it yourself, just email us at feedback@tripit.com and let us know what you want. While we can't promise to make every change you ask for, we will consider them all. The more people who ask for something the more likely we are to make it happen.
TripIt Mobile
How can I access my travel plans while I'm on the road?
Even if you don't have a computer with web access, you can still get your TripIt info in several easy ways:
- If your mobile phone has web access, just go to m.tripit.com to use our slimmed-down mobile interface. Read more about TripIt Mobile below.
- Use our TripIt To Me feature to have your itinerary emailed to you. Just send an email to plans@tripit.com with a command like "get trip" and we'll email it right away. More about TripIt To Me
- If you've setup our iCal feed to your personal calendar application, then your trip info is already on your personal calendar, which you may access via your mobile device.
- TripIt is also great for basic printing because all your trip info is in one place, organized chronologically for a very nice printout with everything you need.
Does TripIt have a mobile application? How do I access it?
Yes! Just go to m.tripit.com on your mobile device's web browser and you're in business.
Will TripIt Mobile work on my phone?
TripIt Mobile will work on virtually any mobile device with a web browser, such as Apple iPhone, Palm Treo and RIM Blackberry. Every device handles web pages differently, so your experience may vary, but we built TripIt Mobile to be light and easy on browsers, so chances are it will work well for you. And if you're using an iPhone, TripIt Mobile looks pretty snazzy, if we do say so ourselves.
Can I do everything on TripIt Mobile that I can do on the main TripIt site?
TripIt Mobile is a slimmed-down version of our main site, optimized to be lightweight for mobile devices. So we've cut out all the clutter and tried to focus on the main thing you need while on the road – the ability to retrieve your travel info. You can also share trips with others, so if you urgently need someone to know when you're arriving or what hotel you're staying at, we've got you covered. We also display your Closeness Matches on TripIt Mobile, so you can connect with friends and colleagues.
How is TripIt Mobile different from TripIt To Me?
TripIt Mobile is a live website that you access from a device that has a web browser. It's like logging into TripIt to view your trip info, but optimized to work well on a mobile device. If you have a phone like an Apple iPhone, Palm Treo and RIM Blackberry, and you subscribe to a data plan with your carrier, then you should be able to use TripIt Mobile.
TripIt To Me is a way to get your trip information sent to you by email. You can send a command like "get trip" to plans@tripit.com, and we'll send back your entire itinerary in an email. This can be handy to keep in your mobile phone's inbox (stored on your device) if you think you'll need your info when you might be out of range of a cell signal and therefore can't access TripIt Mobile. You can also forward the email response to anyone you want so they can see your travel plans without having to be a TripIt user.
TripIt To Me
What is TripIt To Me?
TripIt To Me is a feature of TripIt that lets you get your trip information from anywhere you have access to email, including mobile devices. Just send a command to plans@tripit.com and TripIt will respond right away. For example, if you email "get trip" to plans@tripit.com, TripIt will email back your current trip itinerary.
TripIt To Me is designed to help you out of these messy travel situations:
- On your way to the airport and forgot your printed itinerary? Just email "get flight" to TripIt.
- Landed at the airport and not sure what rental car bus to get on? Just email "get car" to TripIt
- In a taxi and can't find your hotel address? Just email "get hotel" to TripIt.
What is required to use TripIt To Me?
All you need is a TripIt account and access to your email in order to use TripIt To Me. You must send the command to plans@tripit.com from one of the email addresses that you have associated with your TripIt account.
TripIt To Me is especially handy if your mobile phone or PDA has email capabilities. Just send plans@tripit.com a command from your phone or PDA and you can easily access your trip information while on the road!
TripIt To Me is currently available only by email. Support for SMS/text messaging is coming in the future.
How do I use TripIt To Me?
Just send an email to plans@tripit.com, and include a command in the 'body' of the email ("get flight today", for example). TripIt responds with an email back to you with relevant details from your itinerary.
You send us:

We send you:
|

Organizing Information
How are my travel plans organized ?
Travel plans can be either unfiled (appear in the Unfiled Items folder) OR attached to a single TripPlan. You can change which trip an item is attached to at any time, or even move back to the Unfiled Items folder.
What if I just want to save TripClips and other planning information, but not create a TripPlan?
A great way to use TripIt is for collecting interesting travel information that might be useful to you in the future. You may find helpful articles, reviews, and other planning content that you want to store, but you aren't quite ready to start organizing it into a specific TripPlan.
You can save these items to your Unfiled Items folder, or you can create a new TripPlan to hold them. You can move unfiled items to a TripPlan at any time.
How do I delete a TripPlan?
You can only delete a TripPlan that you created -- you cannot delete TripPlans that you were invited to share, although you can remove yourself from these trips.
- To delete a TripPlan you created, click the "delete" link for the trip on the MyTrips page.
- To remove yourself from a TripPlan you were invited to, click the "remove" link for the trip on the MyTrips page.
When you delete a TripPlan, it removes ALL information about the trip and people you invited to share the trip will be NOT able to view any trip details.
When you remove yourself from a TripPlan, the TripPlan still exists, and you are removing yourself from the list of people sharing it. Trip items you contributed -- such as notes, bookings, or comments -- are still visible for all other trip participants.
Why can't I see a TripPlan that I had access to previously?
This can only happen for trips that you were invited to share -- it cannot happen when you are the trip creator.
If you were invited to join someone else's trip, it's possible that they deleted the entire trip, or removed you from the list of people who can access the trip. Contact the trip owner for more information.
TripSearch
What is TripSearch?
TripSearch -- found under the "TripSearch" page -- makes comparison shopping for travel easy. Enter search criteria once, and submit it to multiple websites by clicking the logos of the sites you wish to search. You can even save your search criteria for later use.
Search results are displayed in a new browser window, making it easy to compare prices across multiple sites. Search any site listed next to the TripSearch entry box – search all of them if you like!
Once you've found something and are ready to book, complete the transaction on the travel site you've selected. TripIt does not sell travel, so you'll need to contact the site through which you made the purchase should you require any assistance related to the booking.
Why should I use TripSearch instead of just going to booking sites directly?
TripSearch provides several key benefits:
- Saves you time by letting you enter your travel information just once, then searching multiple travel websites for you. Without TripSearch, you'd have to visit each travel site separately and enter your search criteria over and over in the process.
- Booking through TripSearch ensures that your booking can easily be imported into your TripPlan.
- You can save your search, which makes it easy to check prices again at a later date, without having to re-enter all of your search criteria. You can even store saved searches in a TripPlan to keep them organized.
Does TripIt provide customer support for bookings made through TripSearch?
No! Because TripIt does not book travel, we are not in a position to provide support for bookings you completed on other sites. Please contact the site through which you booked should you require assistance with your purchase.
If you need help importing a booking into TripIt, or with a TripPlan or any of its related functionality, we're happy to provide support. Check this page for information on common problems, or send us Feedback detailing your problem.
If I book travel using TripSearch, how do I then get that booking into my TripIt TripPlan?
Once you've completed your booking, you should receive a confirmation email from the booking site. When you receive it, forward it to plans@tripit.com .

Technical Questions
Which internet browsers will work with the TripIt site?
TripIt is optimized for Internet Explorer (version 6.0 and above) and Firefox (version 1.5 and above).
If you are using one of these supported browsers and are still experiencing problems, please let us know by sending feedback.
How do I prevent emails from TripIt from being placed in my junk/bulk mail folder?
Add plans@tripit.com to your email address book so notification emails from TripIt are not sent to your spam folder.
Microformats on TripIt
What is a microformat?
A microformat is simply some HTML code that we add to a webpage enabling data such as contact information, locations and events to be extracted from the webpage by a microformat reader. To learn more, check out the microformats community website here: http://microformats.org/about/.
What can I do with microformats on TripIt?
Today, you need to install a microformat reader in your web browser in order to take advantage of microformats. With a microformat reader installed, the microformats on TripIt enable you to easily copy items in your trip itinerary (such as an air or hotel booking) to your calendar application. This is particularly useful if your calendar application doesn't support our iCal feed. There are other fun applications too.
Where do I find a microformat reader?
There are several popular microformat readers available. Here are some of them:
- For Firefox:
- For Safari:
- Safari Microformats - http://www.zappatic.net/safarimicroformats/download.html
- For Explorer:
- We don't know any. Let us know if you do.
- The Flock browser also supports microformats.
Troubleshooting
What if I see errors in my imported booking?
We apologize if the import process isn't perfect -- we're constantly working on improving it, but we can't catch everything. You can manually edit the booking by clicking the "edit" link for that booking.
If there are problems in your imported bookings and the booking is from a supported travel website, please let us know so. Forward the booking confirmation email to us at feedback@tripit.com, including a description of the errors so we can track down the problem.
Why didn't my booking import properly?
There are several possible reasons why we were not able to properly import your email submission:
- You sent us and email that wasn't a booking confirmation from a supported booking site. (Click here to see our current list of supported partner sites.)
- You did not forward the original confirmation email as an attachment. TripIt strongly recommends that you forward booking confirmations as attachments to retain all of the information in the original message. This is an option you can control in most email services and clients.
- You are using an email client that alters the content and format of the original booking confirmation beyond our ability to recognize it. TripIt supports most major email services, but some services will do things such as re-writing and converting the contents of an email message when you forward it.
- We made a mistake. If your booking confirmation was from a supported travel company, the email client or service you are using didn't re-write the message, and we still didn't get it right, that's our fault. Please let us know at via our feedback page so we can fix the problem!
What email clients does TripIt support?
TripIt works with any email client that forwards emails in HTML format, including the major services such as Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail and Outlook. TripIt has issues with Eudora as well as any service in which the email preference is set to forward email as text instead of HTML.
