If you are one of the 400 million people around the world who use any of the Windows Live services (including Hotmail and Messenger), we have a treat for you. Microsoft has made TripIt one of eleven services that can now be hooked up to your Windows Live experience. Social activity updates can now be brought right into the applications you use every day, like emailing and instant messaging. Pretty cool!
Here’s an example of how it works. Imagine you are chatting with your friend Sally in Windows Live Messenger. During that chat, she may see a message that says “Bob is about to leave on a trip to Paris, France for 4 days,” which of course comes from your TripIt activity feed. Sally might then tell you that she just visited Paris last month and has some great restaurant tips and other advice to share with you. Similar updates might be displayed after sending an email to someone in Hotmail or by visiting a friend’s Windows Live profile page. The goal is to make it easier to stay connected to your social network by bringing relevant news and updates right into the applications you use every day.
Since TripIt aggregates all your travel activity, no matter where you book, we were the natural source of travel activity for Microsoft to include in this new service. We’re thrilled to be one of the eleven popular web services chosen for this new feature, including Flickr, Yelp, Twitter, and others.
If you have a Windows Live account, you can hook up TripIt activity updates by going to http://profile.live.com. Log on with your Windows Live ID and password, and then look for the link that says “add web activities” in the lower left hand corner. This link will take you to a menu page, and you’ll see TripIt in the column on the right hand side. Just click “add” and complete the simple setup instructions.
